Pharaoh: Conceptual Blending of Cognitive Scripts for Computationally Creative Agents
نویسندگان
چکیده
Improvisational acting is a creative group performance where actors co-construct stories on stage in real-time based on actors’ perceptions of the environment. The Digital Improv Project has been engaged in a multi-year study of the cognitive processes involved in improvisational acting. This better understanding of human cognition and creativity has led to formal computational models of some aspects of our findings. In this work, we consider enriching AI improv agents with the ability to improvise new nontraditional scenes based on existing social cognitive scripts. This paper shows how the use of Pharaoh -a context based structural retrieval algorithm for cognitive scriptsand simple blending rules can help digital improv agents to create new interesting scenes. The paper also provides an illustrative example at the end.

Computational Creativity: Improv Agents and Conceptual Blending
Conceptual blending (CB) is a basic mental operation that plays a fundamental role in the construction of meaning in our everyday life. The core of CB is the partial matching of two input mental spaces and the selective projection from those inputs into a novel ‘blended’ mental space, which then dynamically develops an emergent structure. Improvisational acting is one specialized domain in whic...
متن کاملA Conceptual Blending Approach to the Generation of Cognitive Scripts for Interactive Narrative
This paper presents a computational approach to the generation of cognitive scripts employed in freeform activities such as pretend play. Pretend play activities involve a high degree of improvisational narrative construction using cognitive scripts acquired from everyday experience, cultural experiences, and previous play experiences. Our computational model of cognitive script generation, bas...
متن کاملCreativity as Pastiche: A Computational Model of Dynamic Blending and Textual Collage, with Special Reference to the Use of Blending in Cinematic Narratives
The theory of blended spaces of Fauconnier and Turner (1994,1998), also known as the many-space model of conceptual integration, is a bold new theory in cognitive science that unifies metaphor, analogy, metonymy and conceptual combination within a framework of interconnected mental spaces. Through an analysis of cinematic pastiche, a form of creative reuse and structural blending in the develop...
متن کاملPharaoh: Context-Based Structural Retrieval of Cognitive Scripts
Cognitive scripts can act as a basis for representing behavioral tasks and domain knowledge in cognitive systems. Each event in a cognitive script is either temporally or causally linked with preceding and succeeding events. This temporal progression of events is what provides context to a particular cognitive script. In other words, it is this linking that provides a deeper explanation of a ke...
متن کاملGoal-Driven Conceptual Blending: A Computational Approach for Creativity
Conceptual blending has been proposed as a creative cognitive process, but most theories focus on the analysis of existing blends rather than mechanisms for the efficient construction of novel blends. While conceptual blending is a powerful model for creativity, there are many challenges related to the computational application of blending. Inspired by recent theoretical research, we argue that...
